John Kent - Hot Chocolate

Hot Chocolate: by John Kent

A couple times in early spring you can find me anchored up at the south end of Millers Lake west of Edson AB about 100 yds. off Hwy 16. I really detest fishing that close to a major highway but the chironomid hatches in the spring just can't be ignored.

I equally detest tying small chironomids but the hatch dictates it! The first time I caught fish during this hatch I was really missing the boat land the occasional trout on size 14 2xl when the naturals were size 16 2xs. Every fish I held up was totally gorged out on the pupa with dozens spilling out the mouth every time I supported the belly of the fish.

The following year I was prepared for the hatch and had a banner day. Caught both rainbows and browns up to 6 lbs. and saw a few much larger cruising the 6' depth around the boat.
This is the point that you realize the importance of strong hooks as the fish were annihilating size 16 C49S' and the Diiachi 1120 was a strong hook that wouldn't bend out.
